About Public Radio East
Public Radio East is a nonprofit, non-commercial broadcasting organization, licensed to the Board of Trustees of Craven Community College in New Bern, North Carolina. Originally established in 1984 as WTEB-89.3FM, Public Radio East now broadcasts 24 hours a day on five frequencies, divided into two complete program networks. Broadcast studios are located in Barker Hall on the campus of Craven Community College.
Public Radio East is a regional broadcast network that enriches people's lives in Eastern North Carolina. It is one of only six 100,000-watt public radio stations in the United States licensed to a community college. The station serves as the primary public radio outlet for 17 counties of Eastern Central North Carolina. From north to south, PRE serves the cities and surrounding communities of Washington, Greenville, New Bern, and Jacksonville, and from east to west Beaufort, Morehead City, Kinston and Goldsboro.
The station is recognized as a full-service professional public radio station by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and is a member of both National Public Radio and Public Radio International. PRE consistently ranks in the top 20 public radio stations nationally with the largest share of audience per capita. In 1985, WTEB had approximately nine thousand weekly listeners. Today, over forty-eight thousand people listen to Public Radio East each week.
Public Radio East is a National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate. NPR produces award-winning programs, such as Morning Edition, Weekend Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk, and Thistle and Shamrock. PRE also provides Public Radio International programming, such as BBC (British Broadcasting Company) World News.
Public Radio East is Eastern North Carolina's primary source for classical, jazz, and Americana music.
On January 31, 2003 Public radio listeners in Eastern North Carolina were offered more programming choices when Public Radio East launched The News and Ideas Network on four of its five frequencies.
WKNS, 90.3 FM in Kinston and Goldsboro; WBJD, 91.5 FM in Atlantic Beach; 88.1 FM in Greenville; and WZNB, 88.5 FM in New Bern broadcast the new format. The network's original station - WTEB, 89.3 FM in New Bern retains a format of NPR news and classical music with some program adjustments that include more music programming.
WKNS-90.3, WBJD-91.5, WZNB-88.5, and 88.1 in Greenville continue to showcase the current popular NPR news magazines Morning Edition weekdays from 5 to 9 a.m. and All Things Considered from 4 to 6 p.m.
The weekend format on the new service includes a combination of old favorites such as Weekend Edition, Car Talk, This American Life and the Splendid Table, as well as new programs such as Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, which features Goldsboro native and longtime NPR newsman Carl Kasell.
Public Radio East's News Department has received numerous awards, including the Associated Press award for Outstanding News Operation in North Carolina in 2004 and 2005. In 2006 PRE was, again, recognized by AP with seven awards including: Best General News; Best Sports Programming; Best Consumer Reporting; Best Health Report; and Best Series.

EEO PUBLIC FILE REPORT
Craven
Community College
Stations WTEB(FM), WKNS(FM), WBJD(FM) and WZNB(FM)
August 1, 2007 – July 31, 2008
During
the period August 1, 2007 through July 31, 2008, Craven Community College
(“the
College”) hired no full-time personnel in connection with the station
employment unit consisting of noncommercial educational Stations WTEB(FM), New Bern, NC, WKNS(FM), Kinston, NC, WBJD(FM), Atlantic Beach, NC, and
WZNB(FM), New Bern, NC.
The hiring processes for open positions within the employment unit are
undertaken through the College’s separate Human Resources Department (“HRD”).
The
College routinely engages in extensive activities and programs designed to
promote workforce development and employment. Two such programs, which have long
been available on the College's campus, include:
v
ACT
Center - The College has
also established the Craven Community College ACT Center to address workforce
development and training needs in our community. The mission of the Craven
Community College ACT Center is to provide access to state-of-the-art training
and assessment services at reasonable costs and to enhance workforce
development of our community.
v
Craven County JobLink
Career Center
- The College is a partner with the Craven
County JobLink
Career Center,
which represents the major workforce agencies of Craven
County and provides comprehensive
employment and training services for job seekers and employers in a convenient,
one-stop Career Center.
In
addition to those on-campus efforts to promote workforce development, the
College supports economic and workforce development by collaborating with
organizations that foster business vitality and job growth. For example, the
College partners with the Craven Economic Development Commission and its support
organization, the Committee of 100, organizations which champion efforts that
broadly support economic development throughout the county. Additionally, representatives of the College
serve on the boards of directors of both the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce
and the Havelock Chamber of Commerce and are actively involved in all Chamber
events.
These
activities and relationships increase the College’s visibility among potential
sources of job candidates and thus promote outreach generally.
Additionally,
Vickie Moseley-Jones, Director of the HRD, participated in the Craven
County Job
Fair and Expo in April 2008.
The
College’s radio stations themselves have developed relationships in the
community through which contacts are made with potential employees. For
example, through both formal and informal contacts by News Director Megen
George with East Carolina University
(“ECU”), ECU communications students are sought for informal internship
positions with the College’s radio stations.

Through inadvertent misunderstanding of its obligations (because there were no hires during the relevant period), the College did no place a report in the stations’ respective local public inspection files in August, 2006. Hiring for any position within the College – including positions at the College’s radio stations – is undertaken through the College’s separate Human Resources Department.
