Blacks Innovating In America

NPR's Tell Me More with Michel Martin is hosting a Google+ Hangout On Airfocusing on innovative African-Americans in technology, science and engineering.

From Dec. 2 through Dec. 20, NPR's Tell Me More with Michel Martin is talking with black leaders and entrepreneurs in science and technology through our "Day in the Life" Twitter series, #NPRBlacksinTech. We are hearing from cutting-edge scientists and tech thinkers about the exciting work they're doing in their fields. Despite this vibrant community, African-Americans still represent only 5 percent of America's scientists and engineers, according to a 2010 study by the National Science Foundation.

We are meeting with the 5 percent on #NPRBlacksinTech, and asking them what can be done about the disparity. Michel Martin of NPR's Tell Me More will get answers to that and other questions in a Google Plus Hangout on December 17.

Michel will be joined by Walter Kimbrough, President of Dillard University; Danielle Lee, Research Scientist and self-styled Urban Scientist; Mark Luckie, Manager of Journalism and Media at Twitter; Lauryn Hale of Facebook and Christine Johnson, Founder of DiversiTech.

Most importantly, we want to hear from you. Send us your questions using #NPRBlacksinTech or leave your questions and comments on this page. We want to hear your opinions on the #NPRBlacksinTech series, why you think African-Americans are under-represented in science and technology and what steps need to be taken to change that.
