The Tuscon, Ariz., band Calexico has made a career out of warping genres and musical traditions together into an eclectic, clever, original mix. Drawing upon jazz, alt-country, post-rock and a wide-ranging variety of Latin styles from mariachi to cumbia to Tex-Mex, Joey Burns and John Convertino (along with an ever-rotating cast of supporting players) have crafted a uniquely inclusive vision of indie-rock Americana.
Calexico launched its career with a string of albums and EPs in the late 1990s and early 2000s, then collaborated with Iron & Wine on 2005's In the Reins. Since then, the group has honed its sound on a series of much-lauded releases and through frequent touring, including a stint opening for Arcade Fire.
Algiers, recorded in New Orleans and released in September, is the band's seventh studio album. Currently on tour to promote it, Calexico stopped by The Current's Twin Cities studios to chat with Jill Riley and play "Splitter."
