“Nine to Five,” starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, hit movie theaters 35 years ago. The two have remained friends since then. Now 77 and 75, respectively, they’re reuniting on their first big project since that film.
They play the title characters in the new Netflix sitcom “Grace and Frankie,” about two older women whose husbands are business partners.
The women soon find out their husbands are also lovers, when they leave their wives for each other. The two women, former rivals, come to depend on one another during their mutual crisis.
“We like playing women of a certain age – our age – and we thought it would be a very good platform for talking about aging and growing older and the problems that women in particular face,” Tomlin told Here & Now’s Jeremy Hobson.
Tomlin and Fonda were also were happy to be working with Netflix.
“It’s kind of hip to be on Netflix when you’re an old broad,” Fonda said. The new series debuts Friday, May 8.
