LÁ-BAS, 'Automaton'

LÁ-BAS is a brash, disco-infused trio with a passion for Funkadelic and the blistering punk and funk of James Chance. This song, "Automaton," and the new video that accompanies it are the perfect introduction to the futuristic funk made by the trio of Nathan Larson, Jordan Kern and Angelica Allen. Nathan Larson sums up the video perfectly in this note he sent:

"The video for LÁ-BAS's 'Automaton' is a surrealistic future urban in-the-club banger directed by Savannah Wyatt and shot by the great DP Reed Morano. It features world class dancers such as Sedrig Verwoert and Ousmane Wiles. Heavy use is made of black light, reflective makeup and exquisite costumes (most notable the Metropolis-recalling plate metal dress worn by lead vocalist Angelica Allen). Inspired in equal parts by Hype Williams, Pee Wee's Playhouse and Fritz Lang."

The self-titled album by LÁ-BAS is out today. It features contributions from Jon Natchez (who has played with Beirut, Camera Obscura and The War On Drugs), Daniel Mintseris (who has played with St. Vincent and David Byrne) and many other fabulous players. In addition to lyrics inspired by Fritz Lang's Metropolis there's inspiration from Philip K. Dick, J.G. Ballard and George Orwell.

In 1988, a determined Bob Boilen started showing up on NPR's doorstep every day, looking for a way to contribute his skills in music and broadcasting to the network. His persistence paid off, and within a few weeks he was hired, on a temporary basis, to work for All Things Considered. Less than a year later, Boilen was directing the show and continued to do so for the next 18 years.
