The NC 11 bridge over Buckskin Swamp and Grove Creek in Kenansville will be shut down for more than a week as crews make the span safe again. Both north and southbound lanes are closed to all traffic as North Carolina Department of Transportation crews repair the bridge’s substructure which was damaged by recent rain events. Communications Officer for Divisions 2 and 3 Brian Rick says they noticed the problem during a biannual inspection.
“We don’t take a chance. When we see something like that, we discover a problem like that during inspection, we do what we have to do and make a determination as to whether the bridge should stay open, whether there should be weight restrictions or it should be shut down. In this case, it was shut down.”
During construction, Rick says motorists should expect delays as traffic is rerouted. The detour will take local northbound traffic on N.C. 903, N.C. 50/24 and N.C. 11 on N.C. 50 and N.C. 24. Southbound traffic should use N.C. 24, N.C. 50 and N.C. 903. The closure will be in place until Thursday, May 12.
