NOAA grant funds living shoreline projects along NC coast

North Carolina Coastal Federation

Living shorelines are effective at slowing erosion, providing habitat and improving water quality.  Now, the North Carolina Coastal Federation wants to install more than 2,000 liner feet of living shoreline in eastern North Carolina's sounds, bays, rivers, and waterways.

The project is made possible by a $75,000 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, with part of the funding dedicated to training marine contractors in the design and implementation of living shorelines.  Public Radio East's Mac McKee speaks with NC Coastal Federation scientist Dr. Lexia Weaver about the three year project and how local waterfront homeowners can apply for the cost-share program.
