In Oregon, Warm Springs Fire Disrupts Tribal Reservation

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

Now about 400 miles to the northwest of Boise, a wildfire is threatening an Indian reservation.

DAVID GREENE, HOST:

Elke Littleleaf and his wife Alysia live on the Warm Springs Reservation, where many people have been evacuated.

ALYSIA LITTLELEAF: People are calling this a flat tire fire. They all pretty much know that's how it started, is from someone neglecting to change their flat tire.

INSKEEP: The flat tire fire. It is believed that an RV driving on a bare rim created sparks that caused this fire, which is now affecting 60,000 acres of the Warm Springs Reservation. The Littleleafs run fishing and hunting tours along the Warm Springs and Deschutes River.

ELKE LITTLELEAF: Every morning, I've been waking up hoping that the smoke dissipate, so we can get back to work. But so far, it's the same. And it's a big deal because we're already 70 percent unemployed here on the reservation.

GREENE: Now cooler weather and lighter winds are helping firefighters, who now say they have this fire partly contained. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
