Panel Round One

PETER SAGAL, HOST:

Right now, panel, it is time to answer some questions about the week's news. Roxanne, Andrew Luck, quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts, he's leading his team to the playoffs again. Opponents say that one of his secrets is his mind games. He throws opponents off by doing what to them?

ROXANNE ROBERTS: Does he give them the evil eye?

SAGAL: Far from it.

ROBERTS: He's nice to them.

SAGAL: He's really nice to them.

(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)

SAGAL: It's trash talk...

(APPLAUSE)

SAGAL: It's kind of trash talk, but only if your trash smells like daisies and lilacs. This is true - he'll get sacked by like some 300 pound defensive lineman and he says great tackle, or hey, man, you're a terror out there, good job, or hey, can we just lie here like this until we fall asleep?

(LAUGHTER)

SAGAL: And we know this because he sometimes plays mic'd up for NFL Films and it's crazy to watch. So a player in the Patriots - this was true - was so confused when he tackled the quarterback, sacked him, and Luck said hey, nice hit. The player froze and said, thanks for accepting the hit.

(LAUGHTER)

SAGAL: And the Bills' defensive line is still trying to figure out how he emerged from the huddle with a tray of piping hot cookies baked fresh just for them.

(LAUGHTER)

PAULA POUNDSTONE: So he's doing it on purpose to manipulate them?

ROBERTS: Or is he really that nice?

SAGAL: He's apparently really nice. He's just a very, very nice guy.

POUNDSTONE: This sounds a lot like my emails to my employee.

(LAUGHTER)

POUNDSTONE: It never occurred to me 'til now that I might be manipulating her.

(LAUGHTER)

SAGAL: You're just trying to build her up to throw her off her game.

POUNDSTONE: Man, 'cause she works her butt off for me. She's fantastic. I think that's great. I like a guy who's - 'cause I don't care for football to begin with, but if there was some kindness involved, I could like it better.

SAGAL: Yeah. Well, he's doing it for you. He's really kind.

POUNDSTONE: So do you think he ever just gets tackled to be nice?

SAGAL: He just stands there and says OK guys - like somebody playing with like children - oh, here I'm running really slowly.

POUNDSTONE: Oh, you're catching me.

SAGAL: You're catching me. Oh I can't get away from you. Oh, you got me.

POUNDSTONE: Oh man. Wow are you fast. All right, run up and get your jammies on.

(LAUGHTER)

SAGAL: Coming up, things are not looking good for our panelists. It's an ominous Bluff The Listener game. Call 1-888-WAIT-WAIT to play. We'll be back in a minute with more of WAIT WAIT ...DON'T TELL ME from NPR. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
