Two of North Carolina’s U-S Representatives have introduced bipartisan legislation to aid World War II era Merchant Marines. George Olsen has more.
Representatives G.K. Butterfield and Walter Jones yesterday introduced the World War II Merchant Marine Service Act. The bill would expand the list of documents accepted by the U-S Department of Homeland Security to prove service and to grant honorary veteran’s status to Coastwise Merchant Seamen. Merchant Marines supported the war effort during World War II by becoming an auxiliary to the U-S Navy, transporting bulk war materials to all areas of conflict. A press release from Rep. Butterfield’s office said Congress has previously recognized the Merchant Marine effort but made efforts to prove service onerous. I’m George Olsen.
