'The Salt' Blog Host ProFile: 'I Got To Share Coffee With The Whole World'

My name is... Maria Godoy

NPR employee since... 2003

Public radio listener since... 1999. I started listening to KQED when I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, and it was a revelation. I thought: NPR — that's the kind of journalism I want to practice.

My job at NPR is ... amazing. I'm a senior editor and the host of the food blog, The Salt. I get to pursue so many interests — health, science, culture, politics, business, technology, environment, art — through the lens of food. As a journalist, I've covered many of those beats in some capacity before (I've got a pretty wide-ranging curiosity). So I feel incredibly lucky to have a job where I'm free to explore them all.

I use social media to... keep up with what people are actually talking about and join the conversation.

In my suitcase, you'll find... the leaning tower of New Yorker magazines that I haven't had a chance to read since my son was born. (Three years' worth!)

I've learned the most about blogging from... Scott Hensley, our multi-talented health blogger. He's a great mentor.

If I could share a coffee with anyone, it would be... I think I got to share coffee with the whole world recently, metaphorically speaking, including Jerry Seinfeld, during our recent Coffee Week series.

I always smile when... just about all the time. I come from a family of very gregarious Latinos.

I'm not as Pollyannaish as I sound. (Previous answer not withstanding!)

My biggest cooking challenge is... the same as it is for many of us: time. Luckily, I have a wonderful husband who's pretty handy in the kitchen.
