What Clint Eastwood Didn't Say

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

Time now for a correction:

(SOUNDBITE OF THEME MUSIC FROM "THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY")

SIMON: In Michele Kelemen's story last week about the tensions between Israel and the U.S. over how to deal with Iran, former Israeli Defense force chief, General Dan Haloutz said he likes to quote Clint Eastwood in the film "The Good The Bad and The Ugly."

GENERAL DAN HALOUTZ: When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk.

SIMON: A number of people reminded us that Clint Eastwood's character doesn't utter those lines. It was a desperado known as Tuco, played by Eli Wallach. He's lounging in a bubble bath - yes, even desperados take bubble baths - when confronted by a one-armed man with a gun.

SIMON: But Tuco has a surprise hidden below the bubbles.

ELI WALLACH: (as Tuco) When you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk.

SIMON: And don't leave a ring around the bathtub. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
