We hear an update on the construction of the high rise bridge from Morehead City to Beaufort.

Communing between the coastal communities of Beaufort and Morehead City will be a lot less stressful once a new high rise bridge is operational over Gallants Channel.   The project, which has been in the works for 20 years, is well on its way to completion.

A new community shelter recently opened in Greenville, providing safe housing for more than 60 residents.  This week on the Down East Journal, we speak with Executive Director Bob Williams about the high-tech 2.2 million dollar facility and their mission to help the less fortunate in Pitt County.  Also, we hear an update on the construction of the high rise bridge from Morehead City to Beaufort.  And, a native of Lenoir County whose efforts in multiple American wars, including as a major figure in the state during the Civil War, have been lost to history has his story told by a fellow nativ

We take part in drone testing with the Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort.  From tracking sea turtles off our coast to collecting information about marine debris, drones are proving beneficial to coastal scientists.

From Amazon’s package delivery drone to the Air Force’s mighty MQ-1 Predator, unmanned aerial vehicles come in a variety of shapes and sizes. At the coast, marine scientists are working on new ways to apply the technology, with promising results.

We examine a new draft report indicating eastern North Carolina’s susceptibility to sea level rise.  Researches weigh in on last month’s draft report indicating a more than five inch increase in some areas over the next 30 years.  What would that do to areas like Morehead City and the Outer Banks?

The NOAA Lab in Beaufort is involved with collecting and analyzing data on marine mammal species, assessing fish stocks, and working to understand the Atlantic ecosystem.

This week on the Down East Journal, Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune is using futuristic simulation technology to train students and give experienced physicians a place to refine their skills.  We speak with experts about the new simulation lab and explain how it works.  And, a living history program this weekend in Beaufort focuses on the signs that served as markers for the Underground Railroad.  The Down East Journal airs Friday at noon on all of the PRE stations, and Saturday at noon on News and Ideas.
