ENC Threatened by Sea Level Rise

Residents of the Albemarle - Pamlico Region are invited to share ideas and concerns about sea level rise at a series of public meetings that are being held over the next few weeks. Public Radio East's Megen George recently spoke with Sam Pearsall with the Nature Conservancy. The organization is one of several that are hosting the forums. Pearsall explained sea level rise and the threat it poses to the environment.

New rules on stormwater control receive Legislative approval

New Bern, NC – INTRO - The state Legislature has approved rules regarding coastal storm-water run-off that will supercede rules slated to go into effect next month. George Olsen has more.

The new rules replace those set up in the 1980s that many saw as ineffective in protecting shellfish waters from pollution. For those concerned about closures of shellfish waters, the new rules should be good news.

Study to Chart Public Perceptions of Change Down East

New Bern, NC – There's no question that change is on the horizon and already underway for many coastal communities in Eastern North Carolina. There's also no question that area residents have strong opinions both for and against development. Researchers at Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort are launching a two-year study aimed at documenting community perceptions of development and land-use change on coastal communities Down East. However, the number of children in need of a home far exceeds the number of foster parents who are able to offer one. New Bern, NC – Author Jack Kerouac is indelibly tied with the Beat Generation and best known for his work On the Road . Much myth and legend surrounds the novel, originally typed on sheets of paper known as the scroll . The truth is a bit more complex, though. Writer Marion Blackburn journeyed to New York City in February to see the original typed scroll of On the Road in person. She, and her husband Greg, traveled by train from Rocky Mount to Grand Central Station and she shares her journey with us.
