Event Description

James R. Reedy, Jr., nautical archaeologist and maritime historian, will present a talk on the role of the 22nd British Anti-Submarine Strike Force in combating the German U-boat menace off our East coast. This squadron of converted ocean fishing trawlers was sent to the U.S. during the first months of 1942 to aid our Navy in the fight against Hitler’s submarines, which were sinking enormous numbers of merchant ships off our East Coast. The HMS Bedfordshire and HMS Senateur Duhamel, both sunk off Cape Lookout, were units of this squadron.
