People in the sailing capital of North Carolina won’t have to drive far to get groceries anymore. A ribbon cutting takes place Wednesday July, 27th on a new Piggly Wiggly in Oriental. Jared Brumbaugh reports.
After the closure of a Walmart Express in January and longtime local grocer “Town n’ Country” was shuttered last year, people in the rural Pamlico County town had to drive 15 miles to Grantsboro to the nearest shopping center. Now, some six months later, the remodeled grocery store – “The Piglet,” as locals call it – will open in the former Walmart space. Oriental Mayor Sally Belingia says store owner Billy Flockhart has worked with locals to provide things they want, like organic items, a butcher shop, a pharmacy and a café.
“He put a survey on our local towndock website and so many people took the survey. And he said he’s stocking it, this Piggly Wiggly here, with a lot of the stuff from the survey.”
The grand opening and ribbon cutting takes place at 9 a.m.
