The North Carolina Department of Transportation will allocate more than $12 million in grants for infrastructure improvement projects at 10 airports across the state.
Nearly half of the state and federal funding is designated for projects in two eastern North Carolina counties. $2,000,000 will go towards repairs at the Kinston Regional Jetport terminal. This will be the first major upgrade since the terminal was built almost 50 years ago, says Allen Thomas, Executive Director of the North Carolina Global TransPark.
“We’re making some modifications. Now, we expect construction to go through the summer. We’re also doing an entire resurfacing of our 11,500 ft runway. So by fall of this year, we will have a refurbished facility as well as a completely resurfaced runway with air tower.”
The 26,000 square foot facility is built alongside the Global TransPark which has one of the longest runways east of the Mississippi River. $3,803,486 will be allocated to Plymouth Municipal Airport in Washington County for the permitting and construction of an additional taxiway. The airport is in phase two of a seven year improvement plan which includes additional hangers, a maintenance facility and security enhancements.
